Passive and Active Terminology

I have read in many article about passive and avtice,,,some of these article:

1- Passive and Active FTP.

2- Passive and Active mode for VLAN Trunk between switches.

3- Passive and Active Cisco router Interface.

4- Passive and Active Hub.

What do word paasive and active mean in general ?

From what I understand of it, Passive means that it's not invasive. The device is on and waiting to be contacted, or to do something, but will not change anything. Active on the otherhand is invasive. Sending out a signal and possibly doing something to it. In the case of a passive hub, it's just passing the data along. With an active hub, it's adding to the signal (boosting it) before it moves on.

Active Hubs have an AC power supply hooked to them, passive ones do not.
