I don't know if the fact that I'm using a 25 ft ethernet cable to get to the jack that is probably going to somewhere much farther away has anything to do with it.

My roomate uses the wireless and it is like .8 mbps dl and .4 ul. That is disgusting.

25' for your ethernet run isn't bad, I have run more than that with no problem. But the unknown (to you) distance after that could play into it. It also depends on how many other students are sharing the network, as well as what type of things they are doing on the network. Lots of factors. Maybe you could get a hold of someone connected with the IT department at your university that could tell you what you could expect for an average UL/DL speed for your network, the average I mean ?
