Only downloading at 30KB/s

All my friends talk about DLing 800KB/s or more, and I can only get 30 maybe 50 if I'm lucky. Can someone please tell me all the possible problems I could be having?

I have SBC Yahoo Dsl

Firewall maybe. Do you have a router? How far away you are from the beginning of the signal has some impact.

I have the windows security alert on but the firewall, updates and virus protection is off (everything is off) . Also I am connected to my router through an ethernet cable.

Go to Speedtest.net and post a picture that it provides.

DSL speed usually depends on the distance from the phone center. Try to call On-site help from at&t and see if they can find your problem. From the phone jack to the modem, did you use a DSL filter?
