Ntlworld & Outlook

Hi guys,

Quick question. My dad works away and stays in a hotel. Before he went, I set up his Ntlworld Virgin Media email address via the bog standard smtp.ntlworld.com & pop.ntlworld.com (ports 25 & 110).

Everything worked perfectly well at home, he could send and receive emails with no issues.

Now he's phoning me up saying he can't send emails when he's connected to the hotels wireless. I believe it has something to do with the hotels way of combatting junk mail.

I've looked on Virgin Media's website, and they instruct ntlworld users to use different SMTP & POP3 ports (SMTP:465 & POP:995) in contrast to the aforementioned default ports. I've tested these settings on my Macbook, and they work (send/receive). But it doesn't prove anything because I'm using Virgin Media anyway.

Is there a workaround for this? Or is it virtually impossible to send and receive email via an ntlworld/virgin media account through Outlook if you're connected to anything but a Virgin Media line?

Any help would be great.

Those ports are probably blocked by the hotels.

Hi,

Have your dad change his Outlook mailbox settings to the ones given by Virgin Media:

Virgin Media: Email settings for addresses ending in @ntlworld.com

Use the port numbers provided by Virgin Media (i.e. SMTP: 465 and POP3: 995 or IMAP4: 993). You might also consider getting him to change the incoming mail protocol from POP to IMAP, for the advantages it provides.
