New hub not recognised by PC

Hi, I have recently changed broadband suppliers. I am now with BT. My recently purchased lap top works fine as I am now using it. It recognised the new hub right away but my upstairs PC wouldn't. Tried several ways to get it to recognise it but wouldn't have any of it. Phoned BT and spoke to one of their technicians and after we went through all the possibilities, he said I need to re-install my operating system which is XP. I don't have a disc and don't know anybody who does.
Is there anything else I can do?

I doubt that reinstalling XP is the correct solution here. It's possible it would fix the problem, but it's a last resort really.

Are you connecting wirelessly or via cable? (if you can't connect one, try the other). When you say it doesn't recognise it, is it not able to see the wireless connection, or does it see it but isn't able to connect?
 
The PC upstairs wireless? Or Wired into the hub?

If wireless, might be worth deleteing the wireless settings and re-connecting to the hub using the wireless key?
