yeah thats the right company, but the product isn't there.

think i just found the model number.......just says "5 port"
product name "fast ethernet switch"

ok so it is a switch not a router. There is your problem. If your modem does not have dhcp capabilities then it will not work for what you want. Hook your computer up to the modem. open up a command prompt. type ipconfig /all and see what it says for dhcp enabled and dhcp server.

thats the problem then, yeah?

how do i fix that?

Go and return the switch and get a router. Get either a linksys or d-link.
