I figured out why my old Netgear's range was so awful, opened it up today and the antenna wire had been completely pulled off of the board. Apparently the wire wasn't glued down very well so simply rotating the antenna back and forth ripped it off of the board. Very poor design in my opinion, and with the wire being a tiny coaxial cable, it'll be hard to solder back together. So, if you have a Netgear router be careful with the antenna!

Mate, if you want a really good wireless signal buy an aerial/big antenna that's like a foot long, you can pick it up from ages away! Plus its really strong.

Actually, simply re-soldering the antenna back to the board gave it a huge signal boost, I was able to pick up my signal all the way at the end of the hall (I'm in a dorm) when my room is on the other end.
