To cut a VERY long story short, I'm going to be visiting my parents for a vacation. They have cable internet on their desktop, but there is no modem or router...the ISP has installed a cat5 cable that plus into the NIC in the desktop and that's how they get their internet(don't even ask!! I wish they lived in the US!)

The internet is locked into the desktop so tight that if I plug the cat5 in my laptop, the connection is not accepted at the ISP's end....buying a router is a last option.

Is there any way for me to share my parents's internet connection, say via their USB port? I have a wireless pcmcia card for my laptop.

Thanks for any help

However, (If you're comfortable with playing around with hardware) you could add another NIC card to your desktop and then an outgoing Class 5 cable to your laptop...
This makes the desktop a proxy server.. and it will have to be ON whenever you want internet on the laptop.

NIC-1 NIC-2
------>PC----->Laptop.
Cat5__ Cat 5

And use some software like Wingate for the proxy server settings.
