Need Help With Internet! Asap!

Hi guys, I just got a new laptop and I just reinstalled windows to get rid of the bloatware. I'm not really stupid when it comes to computers but I'm not good at internet connections. My problem is I'm using a ethernet cable and for some reason when I plug it in, I can't connect through the ethernet. Do you know how to get it actively working? Right now I'm using the wireless. Thanks a lot!!
