Why is my modem running a DHCP service? So that means my router needs an IP address? Why does my router need an IP address? If your router is running NAT wouldnt that mean your IP changes a bunch of times before actually getting to the outside?

As far as security is it safe for my modem to do this? Can I turn it off and find a way to statically connect my router to modem?

internets -> dsl modem -> router

Some newer "modem's" contain NAT

If you can find out the IP of your modem you can go in and switch it to bridge mode usually. When you do this your modem will no longer Route, run NAT or run DHCP.

thanks for the help. I saw bridge in the configuration but can you explain to me whats that going to do and why I need the IP address of the modem? from what I understand if I switch it to bridge its going to just pass the connection along and I would need the ip address so the router knows where to send the information. can you straighten out how wrong or close I am
