I have a m9750 Alienware Laptop with Vista 64bit, I believe. Anyways, im in the Marine Corps, and i use the internet at this Internet center here, so i have no access to the modems/routers. The route is Linksys BEFSR41 from what i can tell.

Anyways, my internet worked fine (ethernet cabled) here since i got here. But tonight, i downloaded a game client from fileplanet. I went to open it, and it didnt open, but made my comp run choppy. So i restarted, still ran choppy, then my network connection icon in the right didnt show the "connected" icon (that green circle or whatever).

I looked at my anti virus stuff, and it was all red, so i assumed the file messed up my comp. So i messed around a bit, no good. I said screw it, and just reformated my system (alienware has some good built in abilities).

It finishes, and guess what, still stuck on unidentifiable, status: limited connection.

A few others have this problem here. If i cant end up fixing it, i'll take it to GeekSquad at BestBuy, see what they can do. If they cant fix it, then im pretty screwed. I do have Verizon Internet Card, but dont like using it for dling, as i need to dl all my drivers again.

Please help.

May have to actually format it yourself w/ a fresh copy of windows and your software. I don't know if you have that ability or not where you are at. But if you just restored your system using the emergency partition some companies place on the laptop, it could very well be messed up too.

So now that you formatted using Alienware's stuff, does your anti-virus still indicate any issues? Guess i'm confused there. Because if everything seems fine now, then you may just need to ensure you have the correct Internet settings.

No, it made a fresh reformat, it's like it was when i first turned it on. My McAfee antivirus is gone, all my programs gone, everything.

When i reformated, i chose to keep my backup files (had none), but if i cant figure it out soon, im going to reformat it so its fresh out of box.

What do you mean by fresh reformat and fresh out of the box? There really is only one 'reformat', what the manf. software did was just restore the system back to the 'out of the box' state. It doesn't actually format (totally wipe out EVERYTHING) the drive, otherwise you couldn't actually install the OS.

Since you've already restore the computer back to an original state i still think it is either spyware/virus that was put onto the partition of the drive that had your system restore information. The other being you just needs to find out the new internet settings and properly configure that. What is your current IP?

Easy way to find out about the antivirus and spyware is to borrow a friends computer, download AVG or Avast (free editions) and Spybot S&D (both total less than 100 mb) and install those. Then run them to see if there is an issue. I really feel it is just a settings issue though.

I believe its COX internet, but i have no control with it as its in the computer center.

What i was trying to say is the AlienRespawn lets me chose to completely parition my computer, or just the harddrive, with stuff on backup, or i can roll back my computer.

What sort of internet settings should i have? What and where? Im guessing when you say my internet settings, it's not the simple easy ones.

do an 'ipconfig /all' from the run console and check that you pc got an address assigned properly assigned to it thru DHCP.
If it didn't, try an 'ipconfig /release'
then 'ipconfig /renew'

If you do that I can rule out a couple of 'possible' problems.

I will try that 2morrow. I connect fine with my Verizon Internet Anywhere card...Not sure why thats the case.

During startup, i selected Networking Boot, and it went to a black screen, did the GUID, then i guess tried to get the DHCP, but it said there was none. Could this be the problem?

Im not sure what im looking for here, but here is ipconfig /all:

EDIT: If i cant figure this out by 2morrow, im taking it to BestBuys and seeing what geek squad can do.

Update:

I found out everyone with Laptops in this computer center gets the same problem...So its not me and probably the router and their system, which absouletly sucks because i have no control over it. Im going to try to find a person who runs this (theres a worker here who doesnt know **** about anything) and ask them if they could try to fix it.
