What are the types of leased line? is a DSL a leased line also? when we say a leased line, does this mean that u have leased a long cable going to the CO and to ur remote netwrk? and that your netwrk is not connected to the internet cloud coz no other packet can ride on ur leased line, thats why its secured?, just a point to point connection to ur remote netwrk? so theres no internet access? pls enlighten me.

leased line Last modified: Friday, August 16, 2002

A permanent telephone connection between two points set up by a telecommunications common carrier. Typically, leased lines are used by businesses to connect geographically distant offices. Unlike normal dial-up connections, a leased line is always active. The fee for the connection is a fixed monthly rate. The primary factors affecting the monthly fee are distance between end points and the speed of the circuit. Because the connection doesn't carry anybody else's communications, the carrier can assure a given level of quality.
For example, a T-1 channel is a type of leased line that provides a maximum transmission speed of 1.544 Mbps. You can divide the connection into different lines for data and voice communication or use the channel for one high speed data circuit. Dividing the connection is called multiplexing.

Increasingly, leased lines are being used by companies, and even individuals, for Internet access because they afford faster data transfer rates and are cost-effective if the Internet is used heavily.

tnx, i understand now, leased line refers to point-to-point connection between remote offices, its not like a dsl or a T1 connection that is used only for internet.

Yes, leased lines are not used as internet access (unless you have remote offices sharing ONE internet connection through a central point), but it isn't a connection to an ISP. Also, T1 refers to the SPEED of the connection, not what it connects to. A T1 is a 1.544 Meg connection, and can be a leased line, frame circuit, or internet connection.

Also, differences between leased lines and say DSL or cable service (besides price) is response. You will get better response for repair in the case of a leased line than you will with cable or DSL, resulting in less network down-time.
