Lanning problems

I'm trying to lan Civilization IV. If I don't use a cable to connect the second PC to my modem, the wireless connection works and I can see the other computer. However, when I use the cable, I can't see the other computer when I start up a lan game. Anyone know how to solve this?

EDIT: I've tried keeping the wireless connection on the laptop (which I referred to as second PC) off and on and there was no difference.

Are you sure the wired connection doesn't have a static IP address that might be different than your network? Check that it has the right IP address, you can right click on the network connection and view status. Click detail for more info. Then use ping to test the connection to the remote computer.

Good tip is to disable any firewall for the time being.

is there any reason why you cant just use Wlan and forget about the cable?

Check all the network protocols bound to the wireless adapter and compare them to the ones on the cabled adapter. (There are what show up when you see the first screen in the properties of a network devices. You will almost always have TCP/IP in this list).
