IP Config /renew not working....

Trying to help fix a friends comp. They are getting the little or no connectivity icon in the tray. So, far I've rebooted the comp and modem a couple times. Then I went into a command prompt and did ip config to get the ip. Then I did ipconfig /renew and it didn't work got an error message ( I can't remember, sorry) So, I then went in and set an ip manually then reset it to obatin one automatically, that resulted in a new IP for the machine. But, still no internet. So, I went back to the command prompt and did ip config /release and that set my ip to 0.0.0.0. Then I did ip config /renew and got a new ip again, but still no internet. Called the ISP (Charter) and the dude told me something in my registry was the problem and that I needed to call Dell. Anybody have an idea of what it could be?

modem directly conencted to the pc?

what dns server addresses do you get?

try pinging 68.142.226.34 which is ip for www.yahoo.com

It is directly connected. I uninstalled/installed the NIC 3 times also. I tried pinging www.yahoo.com but not the actuall ip since I didn't know it off hand.

What OS is he running? You might need to use winsockfix.

If it's XP use winsockxp http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html
