I am currently working on a project that requires a microcontroller with wi-fi, can be run off of batteries (AA at the largest), use a PIR sensor (digi-key's PYD 1598) and is somewhat easily programmable.

I have tried a Raspberry Pi Zero W with the PIR sensor sold on Adafruit, but the device drained 4 AA batteries within 12hrs or less.

Currently I have an Adafruit HUZZAH ESP8266, but programming the device via Lua is giving me some difficulties and I am unsure that this is the board to go with.

What microcontroller would be best for this project that is currently on the market? Would it be better to build my own board to fit just an ESP 8266 and a PYD 1598?
