I have a linksys befsr41 router 4 port switch, wired with cable internet access. Recently my internet has begun to drop every few hours and the only way to get it back on is to shut off the power to both the router and the modem and turn it back it on. For some reason this gets the internet back running again. Now I did some trouble shooting, I replaced the linksys router with a new one thinking it would solve the problem, it didn't. I then hooked the modem directly into the computer and still had the problem. So then I went to my internet service provider and got a new modem, after I configured my router to the modem the internet worked fine for a few hours and dropped again. Now this all started when I built a new computer and hooked it into the router to replace an older computer I had, but I don't see how that could cause the problem. Can anyone help me with this?

have you checked to see if the network cables are firmly connected into the slots of the router? Do you have network cables than you can borrow and see if the cables are the problem?

Also, how old is your router? Maybe its just too old for windows XP to operate with.

P.S. Nice name, Viagra Police! LOL

see the thing is, all 3 comptuers are connected to the router, and when my internet drops, so do all the other comptuers. The router was just replaced so it's brand new. When I hook the modem into the computer directly I still have the problem. I've already replaced both the modem and the router to try and fix this.

try contacting Linksys Tech Support.

I have a Linksys Wireless Antenna and a D-Link router, and i have had connection problems, i guess Linksys is a lemon...

i have a linksys wireless router and i am constantly losing connection with both the wired ad wireless connection. i'll be buying a netgear router soon

when you say you've had connection problems, does the internet stay on for a while until it eventually loses the connection?

This statement is not valid. It doesn't matter how old a router is, it WILL work with whatever operating system is being used, as long as the OS adhere's to IEEE 802.3 networking standards... The only way a router might not work is if it is an IPv4 router on an IPv6 network.... (but that is a little too advanced for this thread)... Anyways, the ONLY networking hardware issues that might be related to the OS is the NIC card on the PC if it doesn't have proper drivers. A router is a computer, and it doesn't care what operating system is being used.

Anyways..... have you tried hooking other computers to the modem to re-create the issue?

Does the modem have LED's on it for connection status, and if so, what do they show when internet drops?

Ive hooked just one comptuer to the modem to see if the issue occurs, it does. When it happens all the lights on the modem and the router still flash like nothing happens.

I was thinking it had something to do with me running resource hogging P2P applications because it always seems to go down while im using torrents. Is this possible?
