internet adapter driver

I have lost the driver to my internet adapter on my desktop {not this pc} therefore cannot access the web to download the required driver. anyone know how to solve this problem. Unit is HP Compaq with XP O/S

HP is a brand name and Compaq is another brand name that's owned by HP.
What do you mean by internet adapter? are you referring to the on board ethernet ? or does this pc have a seperate ethernet card? Is it a wireless device? Please give us some more detailed info
Can you provide a model number?

Best thing to do is get the model of the machine and go to HP.com and download the correct NIC driver.

Put it on a flash drive or CD and copy it to the desktop.

Run the install or point device manager to the correct folder.

I hope this is what you mean by you just need a means of putting it onto a machine with no internet.
