internet access in a small office

I am currently working in a small office. There are four pcs running windows xp
when pc 1 is turned off databases and internet cannot be accessed by the other 3. there is no router in the office all pcs are on a lan would firewalls being turned on be causing this. I have noticed before firewalls can prevent 1 pc seeing another in small networks. Any ideas

What is the network setup?

Sounds like the one is the one doing the sharing of the connection. Since you are only running four computers, a basic router would be all you would need. The office can pick one up for $30 at Newegg.

It sounds as if the network runs thru the first PC. So turning it off would disable the whole network.

Yeah, how is the network setup ?

If the database is hosted on pc1, then when the machine is off it will not be acessiable on the network.
