I am familiar with how dial up networking gets me on the internet. How does my company get me on the internet when I am on a network? I have fiber at home - how does that work?

Do you mean the systems used for these communications, or how these communications work at their most basic level? For example, fibreoptics work by bouncing light down a reflective tube.

If i understand, it's exactly the same as at home, BUT with a lot bigger pipe with multiple connections.

Line runs into an industrial router, usually a huge switch and hub, then gets spit out to individual computers.

I mean the basic level.

Excellent brief explination patonb, but I would need to go further with a discussion of how the job is actually done. Clearly its not efficent any more to run hardwired lines from a router to client PCs. When I double click on internet explorer how does it know where to go to find the router that will take it to the net? When I click on the web browser on my fiber connected PC at home how does it uderstand where to find the gateway to the internet. I need to understand this issue before proceeding wit more complicated issues.

Oh, search wikipedia for network packets, routing and how switches work.

This is very complicated using protocols and what not, with a little bit of porn magic....

And thats my full knowedge writen above.

it would serve you well to go pick up a network+ book. what your asking isnt brief. Network+ books will explain this in much more clearer way then you will ever find on a board like this, plus it would be alot of typing.

but the best way i can discribe it briiefly would be that it is similer to the US mail system but much more complex.
