thanks to all who helped last post
i have now got the 2 pcs recognising each other.
my question is how do i go on the internet from my desktop which is downstairs when my laptop upstairs has the aol broadband on?

You'll have to setup Internet Connection Sharing on the PC hosting the AOL broadband connection. Then run the setup on the other PCs accordingly to the IP address that you set your host to.
