Inconsistent latency

An erratic connection speed is giving me a big headache in my games!

Lately my pings have frequently been above 200-300.

When I power cycle the router, they drop down to normal ranges again, but only temporarily -- why would that be? Possible causes, anyone?

Example, pinging Google in command prompt:

avg 267ms
avg 338ms
avg 298ms

Power cycle, instantly fixes it, as you can see:

avg 46ms
avg 43ms
avg 44ms

I play for ten minutes, it gets bad.

avg 272ms
avg 351ms
avg 202ms
avg 294ms
avg 299ms
avg 345ms

Power cycle.

avg 48ms
avg 50ms

Any help appreciated!

Linksys Etherfast 8-port switch BEFSR81

Should be shared between my roommates and I, though I'm sure other people in the building affect my connection speed. But this does not only happen at peak times.

LOL, I hope you mean that the apartment complex provides free internet for the entire complex. Otherwise, you need to get your connection password protected.

Every room should have their own Linksys router just like mine, no reason to leech onto ours.

a router doesnt make your connection faster,

if you all are sharing 1 ISP, the bandwidth is shared.
