How to get WRE54G Wireless Expander to work?

Hello, I bought thias for someone as a gift as it stated it could use any wireless G router, and he has two different belkins. However, neitehr have a WDS setting and they have wireless security, will it still work?

On top of this I am having issues connecting an ethernet cable to the device and programming it for the wireless and security. It will not give out an IP, so I tried manual IPs of 192.16.1.7 and .1.239 with no luck and trying to surf to 192.168.1.240.

This supposedly simple and effective device is trying my patience.

You do have to set a static IP on the computer, which it appears you did - I'm just confirming that part for you. If you set your mask to 255.255.255.0, which it should default to, then either of those addresses should work fine. Check for a link light on your computer's Ethernet adapter in case the cable isn't plugged in all the way or the cable is faulty. Perhaps you need to reset the repeater to factory - press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds with the power on.
