How to get an ethernet conn. to room without router?

Hi

I have internet. I have a router from the ISP which is downstairs. I have a TV set-top box which requires an ethernet connection.

Is my only method to run an ethernet cable from the downstairs router up through the ceiling, into upstairs bedroom?

Or is there a more practical way?

If you want hard wire instead of wireless then yes, that's how you'll need to do it.

I need cable upstairs too and in the same predicament.

If you have two PCs that you want to network but no router, you can connect them using an Ethernet crossover cable or establish an ad-hoc wireless network if they have Wi-Fi hardware. You can do anything you could on a normal network after hooking them up, including sharing files and printers.
