I will soon upgrade to a new pc and will keep the old pc since its not worth much anyway.

My plan is to do most of my web surfing on the old pc to try to keep the new one as clean as possible, even though I have antispyware and antivirusware which I believe I can put on both pcs. But of course I still will need internet access for the new pc for playing online games, updating games etc.

Since both pcs are in the same room there is no need to go wireless. I would like to be able to transfer data from one pc to the other. There is no need for both pcs to be able to access the internet simultaneously but it might be convenient to be able to do that.

What are my options?

What hardware do I need to do this? How much will it cost and how do I set it up (or site on internet that tells me how to set it up)?

Can I have both pcs share the same monitor somehow or is it better to have another cheap monitor for the other pc (I can make room on my large computer desk)?

It is also possible that my boarder may ask to share my internet connection and I'm willing to do this, but we would have to go wireless then since his pc is in the other room. If this happened, then of course I'd want 3 computers to have access to the net, but as I said, my pcs don't both have to have simulaneous access.

Would I be better off with a wireless connection that caters for the possibility of additional internet sharing or is it so simple and cheap to have 2 pcs in the same room connected that I may as well just do that?

Any advice/good web links greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You can just use a crossover cable or go straight to the router from the new. I believe you can share monitors, but im not positive. You would not need to go wireless to connect to a comp in another room. You can I suppose, but You could also just run some CAT5 from room to room. It depends on how much work you want to do. I am no pro, but I dont think that It would be too difficult to do any of that. I will let the pros expand for you

buy a switch, plug both computers into it, plug the router into the switch. done

you can buy a kvm to share keyboard, video, mouse (KVM).

router (i dunno where you are from, i just used tigerdirect.ca)
- both wireless and wire
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=485092&Tab=0&NoMapp=0

Instructions:
1. modem to WAN port via Cat5e cable
2. Computer 1 to port 1 on router via Cat5e cable
3. Computer 2 to port 2 on router via Cat5e cable
4. Computer 3 via Wireless

as for sharing the same monitor
i'm not to into sharing a monitor, but this might be what your looking for?

most any router you get will have a 4 port switch built in, linksys/netgear etc.

Bill's suggestion is the best, unless you already have the extra equipment, then the easiest and cheapest sollution would be the patch cable. You could also set up a simple monitor switch and split the video, but that would look pretty grose at some points.

Ok if you want to use 1 monitor, 1 keyboard, 1 mouse to control both computers, here is a link to products that will do this for you:

http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?p=TN...859c3675ba8858a23dd1cb34c743a533b4bdf45a30eb2

Now if you only want to share 1 monitor with both computers and use 2 different sets of keyboards and mouses, then look here:

My opinion on your last question is that if your brother will eventually share you internet and you will have to go wireless, then plan ahead and get a wireless router.

Now as with the router, well that will be cheap also:

Now on setting it up, when u get the equipment, give me a holla, i will give you a walk-through.
