Help with Protocols and Standards

Ok so this is for some computer network coursework. If you can give me some starting information that I can work with/research it will help alot(Would like to learn it myself but having trouble getting the basics to start of with).

What I need to know is. How is a protocol different from a standard and why they are both needed to achieve network connectivity?

This is a bit vague. Can search Wikipedia and google for most information. But when you say how is a protocol different from a standard. What if the protocol is the standard?

Like TCP/IP. That is still the standard. That is how most people still connect to the internet. So what would you need here? Since they are one and the same. So what kind of protocols and standards are you looking to learn about?
