Hi.. I am a new guy here. happy to see this forum with lot of good stuff..

Can anyone help me with the info on disadvantages of using a desktop machine as a file server.??

Also, can anyone tell me the efficient configuration for a file server.. typically in a case, where the storage is high and the users also more than 100?? The configuration which will not give any performance problems??

Thanks a lot

well

desktop hardware - no physical redundency (dual power supplies, dual processors, ECC RAM)

desktop operating systems - not ment to handle 100+ users accessing it.

best configuration for Windows Files servers is GroupPolicy/NTFS permissions.
instead of adding each user to the folder, you can add groups - which makes life a lot easier.

try to set up a heiarchy file structure.

Main Folder 1 - Programs
Sub Folder 1 - Microsoft
Sub Folder 2 - Adobe
Sub Folder 3 - VMware

Main Folder 2 - Drivers
Sub Folder 1 - Printers
Sub Folder 2 - Graphics Cards
Sub Folder 3 - Sound

Main Folder 3 - Accounting
Sub Folder 1 - Purchasing
Sub Folder 2 - Sales
