The problem is most likely that you were connecting the two computers directly with a straight-through RJ45 cable. You need to use a crossover cable. Like bobojuice said, it's much cheaper to make your own, and not too difficult, but you're going to have to do some looking on the internet. Easier and more expensive way is to go to your local computer place, and buy a crossover cable in the length that you need.
