Going Wireless

I am planning on going wireless. I have a desktop and a laptop and I want to network these computers. I know I need a wireless router and a wireless card to start with but how do I connect these and share files as well.
I also want to connect my Nintendo Wii to the internet and I was told I needed to go wireless to do that. What is the best type of router?
Can anyone help with this?

List the operating systems that you have on these computers?
List the system specs of your desktop?
give us the make/model of your laptop?

List any other relevant pieces to this final puzzle that you might have... network cable, external networking devices, nothing? Just would help to understand what you have to begin with.
