Forwarding port 80

HTTPS is for encrypting traffic and so that the client can know for certain the identity of the server. It will not stop people from messing with your cameras.

I hate to say it but the original configuration was probably better than the one you have now
1) VPNs are encrypted to protect your privacy
2) VPNs have built in authentication, so your network can only be accessed by authorised persons

There's only two ways I would consider allowing external access to a (home or office) network:
1) Via a VPN
2) Via an SSH tunnel
