Hi, pls help me on this, need to make sure i understand the status of the interface on a router...

ethernet is up, line protocol down

- does this means that the cable from the peer is disconnected?

ethernet is down, line protocol down

- does this means the cable from both end is disconnected?
- or the device itself is faulty..?

Thanks!

Ethernet is up, Line protocol down usually indicate a bad cable or misconfiguration and on the remote peer.

Ethernet is down, Line protocol down means it's a hardware or you didn't specify no shutdown (Ethernet interface are disable by default). So if the Ethernet is down so will the line protocol. Just like the hardware is down, the software won't work. It can also mean a bad cable also.
