hey, i've been livin in the dorms at my college now for about a week and the ethernet here is really slow for some reason...it should be T1 or T3.

I play some games online and get very good ping during it and very little lag (none from low bandwith) and it's the same way with one of my roomates (good bandwith for online games)

i can also download music and stuff just fine as well. teh problem i'm having is w/ explorer. When i try to access websites my internet is extremely slow. it literally reminds me of dail-up i had a few years ago. it took roughly 20-30 sec to load this page. at home my ethernet is perfectly fine w/ my laptop.

one of my other roomates (i have 4) has the same problem but the last of the 4 has no problem at all. it's pretty quick and everything.

any suggestions? i'm thinking about getting firefox or seeing if my iexplorer has any new versions but it'll take forever to access and probably be fruitless.

oh yeah...this is for my dell inspiron 9200 not the computer in my sig.

Are your roommates connecting to the network via ethernet as well? What version of IE are you using? The best way of updating is by doing a windows update. Have you tried taking the ethernet cable that your roommate uses and plugging it into your computer? Maybe it's the wall jack? Try pinging www.yahoo.com and see what kind of response you get. Have one of your roommates download firefox for you and then transfer it to your computer and see if firefox runs as slowly as IE does.

IE is version 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519 if that helps at all.

i think it's the newest. i'll for sure d/l firefox soon.

i'm starting to think that the problem is the server we've got cuz i found out today that our school of roughly 20,000 usually got 10,000 freshman/transfer students this year to bump it up to around 35,000 so maybe they haven't had time to compensate yet.

i'll try some stuff and if i don't find the problem or a solution in about a week i'll post back up so somebody can help me again.

also my computer in my sig has dual 10/100/1000 or whatever it is. would that speed up my internet?

What server? is it a proxy server?

Games and other applications are probably directly connected to the Internet without having to go through the proxy server..probably.

Computer<====>Switch/Hub<=========>Router<======>Internet

Sometime a proxy server is there to help filter URL, bad contents, porn, illegal websites. Which can be the bottleneck when the server can't handle too many request. Also if they have an internal DNS server, would be the same thing with over 30,000 students!

You can also try doing some spyware scans here on your computer and switch to firefox http://www.techist.com/showthread.php?threadid=117351
