I have heard of the power strips with Ethernet ports and am wanting to know if they work for transferring internet connections (plug one in by the router and another on somewhere else in the house and connect to device) or if they are more for networks without internet. thanks.

Neither - they're for protecting your devices that are connected via ethernet against surges so that any surge traveling through your ethernet cable doesn't damage the device on the other end.

To get internet in another room through the power socket, you need powerline adapters.

I'll echo what C0rr0sive said... avoiding these things is typically best. Those surge protectors tend to filter the line, which in turns filters the noise which is what your signal is... noise. I typically see a good amount of degradation with things like this. High quality ones don't seem to have the issue, but I stray away from them all the way around at this point.
