i know there is a huge difference between video cards and chipsets, i have been told on here...

but is there a difference between onboard ethernet, and PCI ethernet controllers? I imagine they are the same, with PCI being a little faster?

Their can be a huge difference, almost 10X speed difference for same speed cards (Realtek 1839 vs Intel Server cards)

It really depends on what your use for a NIC is. If you are running a corporate network and need mulitple NICs for a server, then yes, NIC cards are useful.

If you are connecting one computer to the internet through your modem, then onboard is good as any. Especially considering your onboard NIC is no less than 10Mbps, while your Inet connection is likely no more than 7Mbps.
