Dropping packets?

Okay so I moved into college, the University of Iowa, yesterday and set my desktop to their network. It's surprisingly fast which I'm quite happy about. However, I went to play DayZ about 15 minutes ago and it connected fine. After about 5 minutes though I would get "no message recieved" for about 10 or 15 seconds, and then it would regain connection. It kept doing this about everything 20 seconds though, and when I asked on the server if anyone else was getting it or just me they said I was dropping packets.

Is there any way to stabilize or fix this? Or do I just have to put up with their network setup?

Contact the IT department on campus. See if they need to unblock ports or if something else is going on.

Try it on a different port if possible. Try a different cable as well; even try a different computer if you can to see if it's still doing it.

I work(ed) at a college help desk, and that's the kind of steps we asked right away before we forwarded it onto the networking department .
