This might be a dumb question but is having a wireless adapter in a desktop the same as a laptop with a built in adapter? I mean with a laptop you can drive down the road and pick up different networks. Can you do that with a desktop that has a adapter that you put in yourself(hypothetically, of course)? Does the laptop automatically change settings when it picks up a different network?

Hello,

Depends on what the wireless technology you're referring to on both machines.

Assuming you mean Wi-Fi (commonly referred to as WLAN or technically IEEE 802.11) then yes, the same conventions apply.

With regards to the last question, assuming you're using the Wireless Zero Configuration in Windows XP, Windows will scan for available wireless networks in the area and (depending on whether you've configured your wireless adapter to automatically connect to non-preferred networks) will automatically try to connect to a network. Once it has successfully connected to the network, it will then try to automatically obtain IP addresses automatically (depending on whether DHCP is enabled on both router and computer).
