I was just going to connect to my Slackware Linux box through putty. I had just installed this Xming thing, (http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Xming), and TightVNC,(http://www.tightvnc.com/), and I went to ping the address to see if everything is a go, and NOTHING!

COMPUTER1 ---------X[Crossover Cable]X----------SLACKWARE BOX
XP Pro - Putty-------------------------------------Slackware 10 - SSH
192.168.0.8---------------------------------------192.168.0.10

What is going on? I uninstalled those programs that I used and removed them from running as services. Faulty crossover cable? I also tried pinging 127.0.0.1 to make sure the NIC's were working correcly. What am I doing wrong?

Are you using a homemade cross over cable? If so, hold up the ends to eachother, and make sure again that it is a x-over. If it was storebought, again, make sure it wasn't mis-packaged...

Do the NICS have green lights when they are plugged in to eachother?

what are the subnet masks for the 2 hosts? I recommend 255.255.255.0.

It is home made. It worked fine and then, all of the sudden for no apparent reason it just quit on me. The link light on the XP machine is orange, and the link light on the Slackware machine is, if I remember correctly, green.

The subnets are as you suggested, 255.255.255.0.

When you setup a TCP/IP connection you need to specify an IP address, subnet mask and a gateway. If you havn't done this yet, point each gateway to the other computer.

You shouldn't need a default gateway since both IP are on the same subnet. I believe you have a bad cable or network card.

Can Windows XP or Linux ping it's own IP address successfully?
