I am on a XP desktop. I have placed two ethernet cards inside and tried both.

I first disabled both under device manager and let windows reconfigure on reboot and made another attempt.

When connected to router I can obtain IP 192.168.1.1 but can't get out.

When connected to the wall I can't obtain a IP even after I call the ISP for a releaseIP.

I have no startup apps running on boot, and no anti-virus/firewall.

Both cards have worked in the past.

if a HIJACKTHIS report would help let me know

and if anything else is needed, inform me THANKS

Can you ping an external website?

Open a command prompt.
type
Code:
ping www.google.com
press enter and you will get the results.

ok. Has this internet connection ever worked or is it new? the ip you get is a bit strange. usually 192.168.1.1 would be the ip of your router not your computer. Open a command prompt and type ipconfig /all. I specifically want the info for your computer's ip and the ip of the default gateway. What type of internet is this ie dsl or cable?

It sounds like your pc is receiving its IP from the router just fine, the problem seems to be the connection from your router to 'the internet'

try what hefemeister suggested. If it fails, just try pinging your router (should be your default gateway btw).

btw, what does 'hefemeister' do/mean/stand-for? anything, or just random?

edit: wow, waited a while before I posted this... :)

router: (default gateway) 192.168.1.1
PC (*with trouble): 192.168.1.100

*two other PC's on network: one on wifi and another wired, working great....on wifi now with laptop, but currently discussing desktop

oh and running cable

If you have xp sp2 or higher lets try to repair the winsock.

from a command prompt type
netsh winsock reset
press enter. Restart the computer and let us know how it went.

I was told by a friend of mine to do this and I wasn't able to see any difference. but hey while it reboots

what is it "netsh" netshell? and "winsock"

don't minded learning in the process, and thanks guys, all attempts are worth a try and are progress to me
