Best way to control a pc over the internet remotely

I have one computer at home and another at school. I was wondering what the best way to be able to remotely control the machine at home. I want to be able to run programs and control file transfers. Any advice would be great.

Well what kind of school is this. I wouldn't attempt this from a high school you can get in deep crap.

Haha sorry, its a college. But I have an outside broadband connection in my dorm room. I have a linksys wireless router between the cable modem in the dorm and a linksys wired router between the modem and the pc at home.

yea sure....use Radmin
just do a goggle search for it by "Radmin". You can select the port you wish to communicate on and then just set that port (TCP and UDP) to forward on your gateway in your dorm and you home. i use it all the time....easy to use....little resources.....it will even go and get a beer from your college dorm fridge and bring it to your house.
