any way to message between 2 machines on same network?

short of using an internet based instant messaging program, is there a way to send a message between two machines on the same network? like last night i was fixing a problem with the printer on our machine upstairs, and wanted to tell my girlfriend, who was on the comp downstairs, that it was okay to go ahead and print...

i'm not yet so lazy that i couldn't just go down and tell her, but it seemed to me there should be a way to talk to her via the network...

anything like this?

is for the MS net send.

If you google, "Netsend" and "Net Send" you will find a TON of apps that mimic this net send feature.

MS Net Send Is a command line messaging unit while others are GUI based.
