i dont think i need to encrypt as my neighbors are a. a group of nuns and b. an old couple like in their 70's so doesnt really worry me much

Just becareful, I know some guys that wardrive residential neihbourhoods looking for people that have networks wide open and then jack them to do less than legal activities... I'd suggest taking your laptop and find how far from your house you can detect your connection... if you can make it to the sidewalk or back alley you're at risk.
