AES + 2 Access Points

I am trying to connect 2 WAP54G access points with WPA or WPA-2 Personal using AES, however they will not connect

layout is

laptop -> cat5 -> WAP54G -> WAP54G -> cat5 -> laptop

both WAP54G's are set in "bridge mode" and the appropriate MAC addresses are set so they can see each other.
as well i have set them in "repeter mode" with the same results:

WEP will work
WPA TKIP will work
WPA AES, WPA-2 Personell, WPA-Mixed will not

establishing a connection with WPA-TKIP works, then only changing the encryption type (leaving passphrase alone) to AES connection is loss.

am i missing something here?

maybe turn off encryption , then connect using all computers w/oencryption. This will flush out all the old wifi settings, then set the encryption using a different pass phrase
