accessing WiFi hotspot from 5 miles away

Yes, it's looking more and more like it won't be possible...I had an instructor last year tell me I would be able to do it, but honestly he wasn't the brightest....lol.

Thanks for all your input, but I think I'll just drop the whole idea. It's really not worth pursuing, considering there's no way to know without first buying the equiptment. I'll just put up with dial-up for a few more months until I move next fall.
