Question For Linux Users

Is it true that linux is more powerful than windows xp? cuz if it is i wana use that os for gaming instead of my windows xp.

and what does it mean when its says that its a open soure os?

Linux is more powerful, yes, but meant for gaming, no, at least not at the moment. Some games run natively on Linux, and others will run fine thru Cedega (a sort of program that lets you run Windows games in Linux), but I don't suggest it.

"Open Source" means that the source code is freely distributable, can be editied by anyone, and is free (as in free beer).

It should be mentioned that there is also the option of "dual-booting", or having both Windows and Linux on the same machine, so that you can get a taste of Linux without ditching Windows.

but my friend told me that you put linux onto a disk and then you set it up so that it boots off the disk. is that true?

No, you can use a bootloader like GRUB or LILO to pick which OS to boot at startup.

You can put Linux on a CD (known as a "live CD"), that runs entirely off the CD and out of RAM, but you don't get a good feel of what Linux is like, because all of your changes are tossed out each time you restart.
