problems with desktop graphics!!

i have ubuntu 7. the option 'desktop effects' works fine when i enable the 'windows wobble'. but when i enable 'workspaces on a cube' then the first time it runs successfully but when i reboot the workspaces vanish. even if i manually add more , still the effects dont work!!
is there some problem with my graphics card? (i have nvidia fx5500)??
or what else could be the problem?

Just checking if I get it right. When you reboot the cube and all that stuff stops working?

* Make Beryl start automatically at boot:

System-->Preferences-->Sessions
New: beryl-manager

i haven't installed beryl or any additional stuff....
i am using the default available options for ubuntu 7 (gnome desktop).
thats why it has only two options 1:wobble windows and 2:cube feature
so any new suggestions or ideas..

my suggestion is to install the nvidia drivers and then Beryl

no, just install the gnome-compiz-manager through synaptic. then under the System-Preferences menu, you should see something called "GL Desktop" click on it, and when it opens, go to the "workspaces" tab and change the number to however many 3d workspaced you want to have.
