I justrecently purchased a "new" pc. I'm not too experianced with these older systems and would like advice to what to put on it. I don't want this thing to just touch the minimum requirements I would like this to be a smooth running machine.

Intel Celeron, 500Mhz
256 Megs of RAM
Motherboard, Case, PSU, etc.

I'm aware that Redhat 7.2 or 7.3 would fit the requirments but are there any other distros that would acceptable? Would such an old Linux Kernal prevent me from setting this PC up to be on the home network which mainly consists of Window PCs?

Hey Tyler,

As Horndude Suggested Slackware would be good but there are two others that might also fit the requirements you are looking for, DSL and Puppy Linux are both Small Linux OSes:

Puppy Linux

DSL

Also here is A link of Both Linux OSs on Floppy and Mini Linux Distributions that are very Lightweight

Floppy

Mini Distros

Hope this Helps,

Any distro would be fine.

With some of the more bloated distro's you'll need to turn off all of the unnecessary services to get to what I would call an acceptable speed. You may find the normal desktop environments to sluggish so you could switch to a lighter one like xfce, or even just a plain old window manager like fluxbox.

Please, please do not fall into the trap of thinking that you can only put older software on older machines, your just storing up problems for yourself. You shouldn't be using old unmaintained software that has bugs and security issues that have since been addressed. Remember this is not Windows, Linux scales very well.

Also your hardware isn't that old, its plenty to make a good, stable, usable workstation.
