Moving Linux

Oh, I see. Well, it looks like you have a bit of a problem on your hands...

What you would need to do to install it on another HD and make it work is to get another precompiled kernel, then once the HD is in place in the Dell, put the new kernel on the system. The question is how...

provided the kernel in use on the hard drive isnt compiled with minimal and specific device support, yes it will transfer, and quite easily

things like X and most other things are POST install setup/confg work

the bootloader must point to the drive so it can find the kernel and filesystem

as far as the other thread/post, honestly with the way its worded I cant parse it with any accuracy to figure out what your trying to say/do

supposedly ... its like this = pretend live linux CDs are actually harddrives with linux installed on them ... they work ... but yours might not?

theres only one way to find out.

Is the bios password protected? or why can't you get into the bios to change the boot sequence?

Just reset it. When you open up the case there should be a battery and by the battery is a jumper. Remove the battery and the jumper for a minute or so. This should reset the bios and you can install from a cd.
