Mouse problem...having my cake and eating it too

I have a USB mouse, and I use a laptop running Ubuntu Linux 6.06 Dapper Drake.

My problem is, the mouse randomly quits working anywhere from 1 minute to 1 hour after boot. From other Internet sources, I have determined that the problem lies with my video drivers. See, I have my 3D-acceleration being handled by fglrx, which is the only way to get a decent framerate on OpenGL 3D games. However, the fglrx drivers appear to be causing the aforementioned mouse problem. Reverting back to the default driver (ati) fixes the mouse problems, but causes the aforementioned 3D games to run really ****ing slow.

So, I was wondering. Is there any way that you geniuses know of for me to have my cake and eat it too, i.e. have 3D acceleration and a working mouse?

Xorg.conf file please, also what model laptop?

to gain access to the Xorg.conf file go Run command> type in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, I'm not sure if you need root permission I think you do, in that case go run command> sudo vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I have a Toshiba Satellite L25-S1194 laptop.

Actually, this may or may not be fixed: I upgraded fglrx to the latest version, and it's working fine so far. It remains to be seen, however, whether it's really fixed or if this is just a clever ruse.

EDIT: Nope, it's still messed up. It just took a while to quit on me that time.
