I have used many linux distrobutions to try to find the best for me. I was a long time Debian user, then Ubuntu. I recently tried Gentoo, I didn't like it. I tried Slackware, I did like it, and it was very fast. I quickly got tired of the no-dependency-handleling (even with swaret) part of it.
Then I found my self downloading Mandriva 2006 DVD iso.
Once I booted the dvd, I was presented with a pretty gui installation.I did my own selection of packages, I picked Gnome for the desktop environment. Once I went through that, I booted into Mandriva. I was really surprised.
It booted just as fast or faster than Slackware (mabey because if different init scripts?).
Immediatly I added new repositories that I got from http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ and did my updates. After a healthy reboot it was time to play around :classic:
Mandriva's control center is amazing. You can easily manage hardware, mount points, security options, and more with a gui. I found it stable and it worked well.
Overall I am really impressed with Mandriva 2006 Free Edition, but with minor configuration.
I do not recommend using kde with it as it not very nice. It is unorganized and bloated. Gnome seemed to work nicely with Mandriva. You also need to add the extra repositories to get better functionality (only add the plf ones if you are not in the US ).
I may have to try Ubuntu Dapper when it comes out though
