Hello, my friend tried installing Linux on my computer (Slackware) one time (it was a while ago), cause i wanted to try it out. Anyways when he installed it, it worked and everything, but when he said he was gonna run something called "X-Windows"or something it came to a screeen and flashed a whole bunch of colors... or just stayed at a black screen. could it be a video problem? please help me on this issue.

btw i have a ATI Radeon 7000

He'll hafta run the xconfigurator first before strting to start up the X-Server.

I guess in slackware there's also a commant called xf86setup

yeah, well im gonna be installing it next time, so can u put all of that into terms i can understand ;)

like i said i dont know anything bout linux...

Sure dude ...

In linux ..the GUI(Graphical User Interface ) is handled by something called the Xserver...

So if u wanna use a graphical interface, u would need to configure the xserver ...for this u would need to run commands like xconfigurator or xf86setup

Also .. i assume ur a n00b to Linux ..i would suggest u try Knoppix first ...as it would same u the trouble of going thru installations etc..

U later maybe try distributions of Fedora or Mandrake
