1. Whats the best distro: your Going to get a basied Answer here but I use and Reccomend PCLinuxOS. Why because everything works right out of the box no tweaking required to make your Hardware work everyting just works. another plus is it comes as a live CD you can install later if you so desire. I reccomend you use this distro However please update the Word Processing package to Open office, this can be done though synaptic

in a terminal type su
Type root password #this will not show up when you type it
type Synaptic
in the seach bar type Open office 2.0 and hit search
hit mark for installation button
Install
(please note this can only be done if you have installed the system. not on the live CD)

you can also go start>PCLinuxOS control Center

that will give you the same result

D/L PCLinuxOS here:

http://www.pclinuxonline.com/pclos/html/download.html

A few other Distros I reccomend are:

Kubuntu
http://www.kubuntu.org/

Like this distro because it uses KDE desktop, it is a one CD install.
be wary thogh it is a tad "bloated"

Mandriva
http://frontal2.mandriva.com/en/downloads/mirrors

This is what PCLinuxOS is based on a BIG distro, very nicly done, easy to install configure and use

BeatrIX
http://www.watsky.net/download.html

A small Lightweight Distibution, no media no clutter used to work. Comes as a live CD which you can install Later

OPENSUSE
http://www.opensuse.org/Download

Now I'm only going to reccomend SUSE cause 10.1 and 9.3 were Beautiful distros to look at and some people like eye candy

you might also want to try this link, it is a Linux distribution chooser it gives you a series of Questions, and based on the data you provide gives you a distro that is suited to you

[/B]

My friend is software engineer. and most of the guys that work where he work, use Linux. He does as well. (Qt etc..)

Thanks again guys..I took the Linux distribution chooser and it recommended Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Mandriva. Just having a look throught the screens now :p

Keep in mind that whatever distro you choose, you can customize them all to look however you want. :)

One of the many nice things about Linux. :D
